Facebook Buy WhatsApp Messenger For A Whopping 16 Billion Dollars

WhatsApp Messenger has recently been acquired by the social network giant Facebook it’s buying WhatsApp for a cool $16 billion dollars.

WhatsApp is a media messaging app for Android and iPhone and boasts over 450 million active users with a healthy user base and keen to tap into the mobile market this could be a very savvy buy for Facebook.

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is incredibly easy to use and has plenty of features (I myself use it all the time) it’s a great way to share media such as pictures, videos and of course text.

It’s free to use over Wi-Fi, however data charges will apply when sending images/video over your regular network as opposed to Wi-Fi.

For me the is not a problem using WhatsApp over Wi-Fi I never use it over the mobile network and most of the people I know use it the same way.

So What Will Facebook Do With WhatsApp?

At this stage it is unclear. With one the co-founders of WhatsApp Jan Koum, stating that the purchase of WhatsApp by Facebook will mean ‘business as usual’ for the messaging service according to a blog post on WhatsApp. No mention of possible new features, however they will operate as two separate entities.

Facebook has been in trouble in the past with privacy concerns amongst users, how would Facebook incorporate WhatsApp into their portfolio?

With Facebook owning Instagram (which has been largely unchanged since it’s buyout) Facebook in a way would have access to a user base of 450 million users. Some of whom will no doubt use both.

With rumours flying around the web at a speedy rate, monetization/advertising, has been mentioned on more than one occasion all of which at this moment are unfounded and merely rumours.

As a user of WhatsApp (I am not saying this would happen it’s just a personal view) I would find it incredibly invasive if my messages where used to serve contextual advertising based on my own personal content, as I am sure you would too.

Luckily this is not the case.

WhatsApp Clears Up The Advertising Question After Facebook Acquisition

Reading through the blog post on WhatsApp, Jan Koum does quote the following:

You can continue to use WhatsApp no matter where in the world you are, or what smartphone you’re using. And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication.

One thing is for certain however with the acquisition of  WhatsApp by Facebook, WhatsApp has a rich pool of new users unaware of it’s app to dip into. Strengthening the platform further and increasing user base.

Facebook Monetization Of WhatsApp?

Although the quote from Jan above states no advertising in WhatsApp, Facebook as a company will have to provide some kind of return on it’s investment.

Whether they use some of the tech for their own messaging service or rebrand WhatsApp way down the line. Who knows? At this stage no one really does.

It is refreshing to hear though that no advertising will be displayed in the App itself, alleviating user concerns is key at this stage.

With Facebook (like any big company) being accused of various big brotherish shenanigans the statement from Jan Koum aims to soothe those hovering there fingers over the uninstall button!

There will inevitably be a fall out. Some who loathe Facebook will no doubt uninstall it just to stick two fingers up at the social leviathan, however I’m sure Facebooks base of users would more than make up for the shortfall in the long term.
