Physical music releases do not always have to follow the familiar route of vinyl, CD or cassette. For this artist pre-release, the music was supplied on a custom bottle opener USB, creating something practical, memorable and a little different from the usual formats.
Each 512MB USB featured a bright yellow casing with black printing applied to both sides. One side carried the artist branding, while the reverse featured the phrase “WHAT IF I SAY NO?”. The strong contrast between the yellow casing and black print gave the finished USBs a bold appearance that suited the project well.
More Than a Music USB
The bottle opener shape gives the USB a useful second purpose. Rather than simply being stored away once the music has been transferred, it can be attached to a bag or set of keys and used as an everyday item.
A non-metal keyring attachment was supplied with each unit, making it easy to carry without adding a bulky metal fitting. Each USB was also securely pre-loaded with the artist’s music tracks, ready for recipients to access.
This made the format particularly suitable for a pre-release, combining the music and branded merchandise in a single physical product.
Helping an Artist Stand Out
While vinyl and CD remain important ways to release and promote music, custom USBs show how physical media can take many different forms. Choosing an unusual format can help an artist stand out, particularly when sending music to industry contacts, supporters, press or people attending an event.
The most effective promotional products tend to be the ones people want to keep. By combining digital music storage, artist branding and a working bottle opener, these USBs provided more than a standard download or promotional item. They gave the release a physical presence while offering recipients something they could continue to use afterwards.
For artists looking beyond traditional formats, a custom-shaped USB can turn a collection of digital tracks into a distinctive and memorable physical release.
